I have developed a habit of saying ‘Yes’ to every job that comes my way. I think it’s the eternal fear you have as a freelancer.

Sunday night was another chance to indulge in the regular scratch evening ‘Scratch My City’ which is produced by Forward Theatre Company. I have photographed a few of these evenings now and have to say this was definitely one of my favourites.

Today i went to photograph the West End opening of Dora The Explorer Live as it transfers for a run at the Apollo Theatre. The show takes Dora’s adventures to the stage and promises a sing and dance along for the kids. There were a few familiar faces present. Dora created a stir out on Shaftesbury Ave with kids pulling their parents with them to go and say hello. I think its fair to say Dora brightened up a lot of kids days despite the miserable weather. It was great to watch.

Janet came to me after seeing some Headshots of a member of her agency. I had also by chance recently photographed her in a show at The New Diorama. Janet said she wasnt looking forward to having to update her headshots and usually felt uncomfortable during the process. It took a little while for us to warm up but once we got chatting we were away. I think we got a nice range of looks out of the session and most importantly Janet was happy with the final outcome.

I had my first job at the Arcola Theatre yesterday, it was the first time I have visited the Arcola. Whilst the main theatre is under renovation all shows are happening in the temporary Theatre Tent. It was a great temporary venue. I was there to photograph the dress run of the UK Premiere of ‘The Sound of a Voice’ Composed by Philip Glass and Libretto by David Henry Hwang. The show is directed by Andrea Ferran and presented by Volta Theatre.
It was the first opera I have photographed and made a nice change from Theatre.
About the Show
From the isolation of a mythic forest to the buzzing Tokyo metropolis, The Sound of a Voice weaves together two stories of Modern Japan. Haunted by the ghosts of the past, two couples try to free themselves from a lifetime of longing and loss.

Forward Theatre Project’s Scratch My City returned for another evening of new writing recently at The Soho Theatre. This time there were four short plays, inspired by four rather odd puppets created by Annie Brooks. Four writers were given two weeks to respond to a puppet. What happens when puppet characters are made human?
The plays were:
Fine by Alison Carr
Losing your voice by Gabriel Bisset-Smith
Extra Marital by Nikki Williams
Myrtle by Tim Price

Yesterday I went along to a rehearsal for a new production – The Sluts of Sutton Drive by Joshua Conkel which will have its world premiere at The Finborough Theatre. We started the morning taken some set ups (which i will share soon) and then I photographed parts of the rehearsal. The cast and creative team were brilliant and very welcoming. I’m looking forward to photographing the show at the end of June.

I got a last minute call on Saturday asking if I was around to photograph Rogues’ Gallery Theatre do their thing in their show The Folk Contraption. Fortunately for me I was. I made a dash for the Southbank with a few minutes to spare. It was the perfect sunny Saturday afternoon show full of songs and stories. Brilliant show with a very talented cast.

RashDash performed a scratch during the West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Transform Festival. It was a small showcase of work from their upcoming show The Ugly Sisters. Accompanied by Not Now Bernard they delighted the audience with a selection of songs and small snippets of dialogue.
Having photographed RashDash for the past 3 years I was delighted to be there and able to capture the performance. It shall go into the archive. I’m looking forward to photographing the full show later in the summer and also creating a trailer at the end of June. Make sure to keep an eye out for it.
Here’s some images from the scratch
You the Player was created by Look Left Look Right as part of the West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Transform Festival 2012. It was an interactive adventure , inviting the audience to explore corridors and unknown spaces throughout the West Yorkshire Playhouse for one-on-one encounters and daring scenarios. The audience were asked to make choices, solve clues and answer questions whilst following a map to navigate their way through the game. The object of which was to reach the end and get out of the maze.
Photographing it was a challenge as there were a multitude of rooms and scenarios happening simultaneously. It was only due to a very helpful stage crew that I was able to get around to all of the rooms and get a few photos of everyone involved. It certainly was a fun experience and made a change from the usual production photos I do.
